X1 Top of the table!

03 Dec 2018

Fernhurst Sports First 5-1 Wittering United FC Saturday 1st of December West Sussex Div 4 South. Bouncing back to the top of the league. Starting the day sat in second place, knowing just a point would take Fernhurst top of the table, Witterings looked, on paper a tricky proposition.  Second versus third, Fernhurst knew they were in for a battle, with key players missing from the core of the side, Toby Austin and Matty Ayres both unavailable. The back five remained the same, Ben West still looking for that illusive clean sheet, with Allcock, George, Feargrieve, and Davis the last line of defence.  A new look midfield, of JJ, Cobbler, Munty and Bower, left Moore and Morton up top.   After a physical and disjointed 15 or 20 minutes Fernhurst took the lead through the first real chance of the game, Morton pouncing on a loose ball, dancing round the keeper to slide the ball across for Stafrace to tap home the opener.  Fernhurst could and should have gone 2 up only to be denied by the linesman’s flag, it was long before Davis put in a powerful run down the right-hand side to cross for Cobby to power home the second 2-0.  The third came in similar fashion to the first, Morton twisting and turning in the Witterings box, setting up another tap in, this time for Moore. 3-0 at half time, a good 45 from the mighty boys in green against a dangerous opposition who were still very much in the game. True to form Fernhurst had a second half wobble, Munt replaced in the centre of the park by Williams, were under pressure and looked tired against a rejuvenated Witterings, eventually the pressure paid off, Witterings back in the game at 3-1.  Fernhurst under the cosh dug deep and held firm.  Sitting deeper and deeper as they absorbed the pressure, this did however mean Witterings were susceptible to the counter attack, and so it proved, Joseph Stafrace producing a moment of pure class, controlling and volleying home from 20 yards, certain goal of the month/season contender! 4-1 and the points in the bag, Witterings did concede a late own goal, another great run from Davis, converted by the unlucky away team centre half.  5-1 at the final whistle, perhaps a little flattering, all credit to Witterings for fighting to the last whistle.  A week off next week for Fernhurst, before the “cup final” away against Del United 15th of December, surely the winner of that game win the league title!  Many thanks to those who came to support and to club president Andrew Brookes for the early Christmas drinks afterwards! West, Allcock, George, Feargrieve, Davis, Cobby, Moore, Morton, Munt, Bower, Stafrace, Brindley, Williams, Taylor. Goals: Joseph Stafrace (20, 75) Marc Cobby (30) Phil Moore (35) Own goal (85) MOM Mark Morton Man of the Match league: 2 (Toby Austin) 1 (Phil Moore, Marc Cobby, Lee Davis, Craig Feargrieve, Joseph Stafrace, Ben West, Matt Ayres, Harry Munt, Lee Davis, Mark Morton) Great game! Onwards and upwards x
